How Spring Grinders Work

A spring grinder is a heavy-duty machine used to remove material from the surface of a workpiece. The characteristic of the grinder is the rotating grinding wheel, which is placed on a stationary workpiece. However, there are several different types of grinders, each of which works in a different way.

Different applications require different springs, and these springs usually require different surface treatments. It is not uncommon to see springs with open ends, but your application may require the springs to be flat on both ends. This is where spring grinding comes into play.

When the end of a compression spring needs to be flattened, an automatic grinder may be used. The bushing or the component that holds the spring in place is mounted on the circular plate, leaving a small amount of spring protruding at both ends.
